Back To School, Back to you - Parents guide to self care once summer is over

Everything in summer is about the kids - activities for them, summer camps, vacations, etc. Almost all summer, parents are occupied with plans for their kids, making sure that they are busy and having fun. Now that August is here, school is near! Moms and Dads are cheering deep inside and secretly high fiving!

Now that the little ones are off to school, it's the perfect parents to take some time for themselves. Here are some ideas on how to focus on YOU now that the kids are back to school -

Connect with friends:

Catch up with old friends that you've not had time to connect with all summer. Or join a local non-profit organization to meet people that have similar interests as you. Getting that adult social scene going is the key.

Start a new workout class or regimen:

Even if you already exercise, try something different that you never would have, like martial arts or rock climbing. If you have never had a workout program before, treat yourself to a few sessions with a qualified trainer at your nearest gym. Invest in your health.

Get a makeover:

Toss out those old shoes and shirts that you've worn a million times already. Freshen up your wardrobe. Go out shopping and treat yourself to a few new outfits, accessories, as well as a new hair do. If you look good, you will feel good!

Finish a house project:

Have an annoying leak, squeaky faucet or floors need remodeling? Take this time to make those improvements. Or just redo your home decor to give your home a makeover. Home decor stores everywhere are brimming with fall decor.

Try a local food spot:

Sick of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, gushers and capri suns? Don’t eat up the kids snacks for lunch. Instead, google or yelp your favorite type of food and pick the best place there is.

Enjoy a spa day:

Pamper yourself with a manicure, pedicure, and/or massage. Show yourself some self-love and indulge in some activities that help relax your body and mind.

When it comes to being a parent, there is no shame in self-care. You have to be well physically and mentally to be the best caretaker you can be. Whether you are a mother of a new kindergartner, or a vet father of an eighth grader, take some time to pick up on activities you’ve never had the opportunity to since your kid was home for 5 years, or try something new you have never done before. Either way, focusing on you will benefit your mind longterm and happiness in your household.
