October is Breast Cancer awareness month, a time dedicated to the education and early detection of breast cancer. Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting American women. 1 in 8 American women receive the diagnosis of breast cancer during their lifetime. Early detection gives the best chance of successful treatment and cure. Over 3.5 million breast cancer survivors are alive today thanks to advances in screening, detection, and treatment.
A Step Towards Awareness
Not all cases of breast cancer can be prevented, but some can. Certain risk factors for breast cancer, such as genetics, are inherent to an individual and can’t be changed. Others are related to a person’s lifestyle. Studies have consistently shown that making lifestyle changes including keeping a healthy diet, losing weight, and doing moderate-intensity exercise, play a role in breast cancer prevention and improving prognosis after a breast cancer diagnosis. It is estimated that a third of breast cancers could be prevented with lifestyle choices, particularly those related to maintaining a healthy weight (including eating a balanced diet and exercising).
Pay Attention to Intensity During Exercise
Unfortunately, there is not a magic number of hours that you can exercise to prevent cancer. But we do know that some exercise is better than none, and more vigorous activity is more effective than less vigorous activity. The American Cancer Society recommends all adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes hours of vigorous intensity activity each week, preferably spread throughout the week.
Outdoor Activities
Examples of moderate intensity activities include brisk walking, leisurely cycling, yoga, golfing, softball, dancing, and general yard work. Examples of vigorous intensity activities include jogging, running, fast cycling, swimming, rock climbing, soccer, and basketball. All these activities are in addition to those that are part of your usual routine at home and work – things like walking from your car to the garage, grocery shopping and climbing a flight of stairs.
